The Hardmoors 55 is a 55 mile Ultramarathon running from  Guisborough to Helmsley. The 55 mile race will take competitors through the North York Moors and the Cleveland Hills in quite possibly winter conditions. Do not underestimate this race!! There will be options for supported and unsupported runners. The race contains over 2000metres of ascent and has a time limit of 16 hours.

The Hardmoors 55  holds 2 old points / 3 new points to UTMB qualification.

The Hardmoors 55 will take place on Saturday 24th October 2020.

The 2020 Route will start in Guisborough at the Sea Cadets on Belmangate and finish in Helmsley at the Recreation Ground on Baxtons Sprunt YO62 5HT

Route & Maps

The Hardmoors 55 2020 will start at Guisborough and will follow the beautiful Hardmoors110/Cleveland Way route towards Helmsley with a few slight changes along the way. The route passes over the crest of the North York Moors and the Cleveland Hills taking in Roseberry Topping and the  'Three Sisters' before reaching the finish at the Market town of Helmsley.

Race start

The Hardmoors 55 race start and registration will be held at

Guisborough Sea Cadets, Belmangate, Guisborough,  TS14 7AQ

Registration opens from 0600. Race starts at 0800.

Race finish is at Helmsley Recreatiuon Ground, Baxtons Sprunt, Helmsley, North Yorkshire YO62 5HT

Coaches, which must be booked and paid for in advance (£15), 

Coach

The COACH will take runners (who have booked a place on the coach) from the Race Finish (Helmsley)  to the race start (Guisborough) BEFORE the event

Checkpoints

The Hardmoors 55 is designed to be run unsupported. Basic food will be provided at some checkpoints. However, if participants wish to have a support team there is no prohibition from doing so. Water will be provided at most checkpoints and hot drinks will be available at a minimum of 2 checkpoints along the way.

The organisers will distribute 2 drop-bags prepared by the runner and labelled with the appropriate race number along the route at 2 checkpoints. Labelled kitbags will be taken to the finish at Helmsley. Mark each bag (a maximum of 2) with your name, race number, and no 1 for first drop-bag destination and no 2 for second drop-bag destination.

Drop bags are non returnable and should be small, we will not accept anything bigger than a standard size carrier bag, Drop bags are for extra gels food etc or a change of socks.

REGISTRATION

Registration will be held between 0600 and 0745 on Saturday 24th October 2020 at
 GUISBOROUGH SEA CADETS

At Registration you will first receive a kit check. On passing kit check, give your full name to the registration team and you will receive your Race Number

RACE NUMBER

Your Race number must be displayed at all checkpoints.

Race Briefing will be at 0750  All must attend and listen.

KIT CHECK

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS FROM THE MANDATORY KIT LIST YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE HARDMOORS 55. OUR KIT CHECKS ARE THOROUGH. NO EXCEPTIONS, NO ARGUMENTS!!

You must carry all the items for the full race, anyone caught without full kit will be disqualified!

  • Rucksack or Bumbag.
  • ID (Driving Licence, Passport etc)
  • Hat (Hat must not just be a Buff) and Gloves.
  • Spare gloves
  • Waterproof Jacket (Must have Taped Seams and a Hood)
  • Waterproof trousers.
  • Full running tights (Tracksters & 3/4 tights permitted).
  • Minimum of 1 litre water/sports drink t (to start the race with, you are allowed to use this).
  • Headtorch/Torch (check you batteries or carry spare just incase).
  • Cleveland Way Map or OS Maps (Not just GPS)
  • Whistle.
  • Survival Bag (Bag not just Blanket) or a Blizzard Survival Jacket http://www.blizzardsurvival.com/article.php/9/blizzard-survival-jacket
  • Emergency food supply (chocolate/energy bar).
  • SPARE WARM LAYER can be a Lightweight fleece eg microfleece/Polartec etc or Merino Wool base layer or Primaloft jacket/down jacket*.
  • A fully charged Mobile phone (to be kept on at all times).

* If your Merino top is worn to start the race in then you will need to carry a Spare Warm Layer top in your bag

* Water resistant/wind-proof jackets are not waterproof and will not pass kit check.

At one or two undisclosed checkpoints along the route you will be asked to show a random item of your mandatory kit list, if you don't have it/them you will recieve the following Penalty(ies)

HAT (NOT BUFF) - 1 hour on your finish time

GLOVES - 1 hour on your finish time

WATERPROOF JACKET WITH TAPED SEAMS -Disqualification

WATERPROOF and/or WINDPROOF TROUSERS - Disqualification

RUNNING TIGHTS (TRACKSTERS & 3/4 TIGHTS PERMITTED) - 2 hours on your finish time

HEADTORCH/TORCH - 2 hours on your finish time

WHISTLE- 1 hour on your finish time

EMERGENCY FOOD SUPPLY- 2 hours on your finish time
LIGHTWEIGHT FLEECE OR MERINO WOOL BASE-LAYER OR SIMILAR - 2 hours on your finish time

SURVIVAL BAG (NOT BLANKET)- Disqualification

EVERYBODY will be spotchecked. Anybody being abusive to the marshalls conducting the spotchecks will be instantly disqualified from the race. You will be checked in order of entering the checkpoint so you will not lose a position. Anybody caught stashing gear or passing it to a support crew/runner will also be disqualified! YOU MUST CARRY ALL YOUR OWN KIT!!

COACH

The COACH will take runners (who have booked a place on the coach) from the Race Finish (Helmsley) to the race start (Guisborough) BEFORE the event

COACH FEE  - £15  This needs to be booked at the time of entering the race on Si entries

 

DROP BAGS

You will be allowed two NON-RETURNABLE drop bags. One for Kildale and one for  Osmotherley 

Please keep these to a minimum size: i.e. freezer bag size or supermarket carrier bag size. Remember there is food on the course, you will not need to bring a hamper of goodies!! The drop bags are really for spare gels, energy bars, food, sock change or an extra layer. REMEMBER: WHAT YOU DON'T CARRY WITH YOU OUT OF YOUR DROP BAG WILL BE DISPOSED OF!

Drop Bags must have your name and Drop Bag location written clearly on the bag. Stickers tend to fall off, so if you use them find some foolproof way of attaching them to the bag, otherwise both your drop bags may end up at the same location.

KEEP THE DROP BAGS SMALL AND REMEMBER THEY ARE NON RETURNABLE

SUPPORT/SPECTATORS PLEASE NOTE:

No spectators or supporters in Kildale village please. The village is not big enough to handle lots of cars. Support runners may come into the hall but any vehicles will be moved on.

All checkpoints are on Hardmoors 55 route/Cleveland Way, if you follow the route you will not miss them.

DEPENDING ON WHICH CHECKPOINT, A 1 - 3 HOUR TIME PENALTY WILL BE GIVEN IF THE CHECKPOINT IS MISSED. YOU WILL BE CARRYING A MANDATORY TRACKER WHICH CAN BE REVIEWED TO CHECK NO SHORTCUTS HAVE BEEN TAKEN 

 TAPING/MARKING

As you know the Hardmoors 5O race isn’t taped like the Hardmoors 26.2 series. 95% of the course is on the Cleveland Way National Trail. The Cleveland way is well signed throughout ( The Cleveland Way uses an acorn as its symbol) Where the Hardmoors 55 route leaves the Cleveland Way the course is taped/marked.

    CUT OFF = Time you must be out of the Checkpoint and on your jolly way to the next checkpoint 

RETIREMENTS

- Pulling out of the race during the event

If you time out or retire and are unsupported please contact any of the following 07780 664592/ 07758 137931 and we will arrange your transportation to the race finish. Please note this may take a while and you may have to wait until the checkpoint you are at closes.

If you decide to drop out of the event due to injury or for any other reason please, if possible, make your way to the next checkpoint, unless close to the last checkpoint (it could be that the last checkpoint you visited may have closed before you manage to return to it). If injured and cannot continue and are between checkpoints again contact 07780 664592/ 07758 137931 and we will pick you up.

You must give the marshall/sweeper your race number

Anyone retiring from the race MUST contact the next checkpoint if possible and also phone any of the following 07780 664592/ 07758 137931

THERE WILL BE 2 SWEEPERS ON THE COURSE AT ALL TIMES

RULES

You may have a support runner from SUTTON BANK TO THE FINISH ONLY but they may not carry any of your equipment. Support runners are not allowed to take any drinks or food from aid stations because the amount is calculated on number of runners and we will not know the number of support runners.

Runners have 16 hours to complete the Hardmoors 55 Race. Starting at Guisborough and finishing at Helmsley . You must pass through ALL the checkpoints within the stated time limits.

Checks will be made at registration and you will not be permitted to compete without the mandatory items.

Any runner who is (in the opinion of the race directors, marshals or medics) unfit to continue will be withdrawn from the race. THEIR DECISION IS FINAL.

You must log in with the Marshals at each checkpoint.

You must notify a race marshal at the first instance if you decide to retire from the race. Once you retire from the race your race number must be surrendered and you will not be allowed to continue.

You must carry ALL mandatory items for the duration of the race, no one else may carry your gear.

SPORTS MASSAGE

Karen from Stadium Sports Massage will be providing sports massages for £10 throughout the day. With Karen's help (pre and post massage) I managed to complete 53 Ultramarathons in 2012 with no lasting damage, some weeks running 3 in a row. I truly recommend her services. Great for those tired muscles! Go treat yourself!!!

Team relay

Hardmoors 55 Relay Teams must include a maximum of 4 runners and a minimum of 2 runners. Relay Teams must have vehicle back-up, wether this be a nominated driver or a relay team runner. It is up to the Relay Team to decide how far each team member runs, but each team member must run through at least one of the checkpoints. Relay teams equipment requirements will differ from the standard race entry (see below).

Entry fee for Relay Teams is £100.

NB We do not offer transfers to other races or other runners. Up to 4 weeks before the race you can have a refund of 80%. From 4 weeks to 2 weeks before the race you can have 50% refund. THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS AFTER ENTRIES CLOSE at 8am ON 14th MARCH 2020
