Hardmoors 55 Risk Assessment 2024

The Hardmoors 55 is a 55 mile Ultramarathon running from  Guisborough to Helmsley. The 55 mile race will take competitors through the North York Moors and the Cleveland Hills in quite possibly winter conditions. Do not underestimate this race!! The race contains over 2000metres of ascent and has a time limit of 16 hours.

The 2024 race will start in Guisborough at the Rugby Club on Belmangate and finish at  Helmsley Sports Club

Come and join us for one hell of a race.

PLEASE NOTE:

We do not give refunds for cancellations. In the event of you being unable to take part, you may transfer your place to another competitor via SI entries up to three weeks prior to the event (providing the event is full), or transfer your race place to the next Hardmoors 55 (not to a different race) up to 3 weeks prior to the event. 

You may only defer your place once.

After the 3 week deadline we will have ordered everything relating to your entry and there will be no exceptions.

Consider taking out the cancellations insurance offered via SI entries.

The Hardmoors 55  will start at Guisborough and will follow the beautiful Hardmoors110/Cleveland Way route towards Helmsley with a few slight changes along the way. The route passes over the crest of the North York Moors and the Cleveland Hills taking in Roseberry Topping and the  'Three Sisters' before reaching the finish at the Market town of Helmsley.

Race Start

The Hardmoors 55 race start and registration will be held atGuisborough Rugby Club, Belmangate, Guisborough,  TS14 7BBRegistration opens from 06:30. Race starts at 0800 Race finish - Helmsley  Coaches, which must be booked and paid for in advance (£22.50),

Coach

The COACH will take runners (who have booked a place on the coach) from the Race Finish (Helmsley)  to the race start (Guisborough) BEFORE the event. ( 0600 from Helmsley Market Square YO62 5YZ)

Checkpoints

Basic food will be provided at most checkpoints and Drop Bags will be available at 2 points. Water and Coke will be provided at most checkpoints

Drop bags (Non-returnable)

Drop bag 1: Kildale (11 miles)Drop bag 2: Osmotherley (30 miles)Competitors are allowed 2 drop-bags, Mark each bag (a maximum of 2) with your name, race number, and no 1 for first drop-bag destination and no 2 for second drop-bag destination etcDrop bags are non-returnable and should be small. We will not accept anything bigger than a standard size carrier bag, Drop bags are for extra gels food etc or a change of socks.

Finish Bags

All  runners are allowed 1 small waterproof finish bag, these will be taken to the finish at Helmsley for all runners (please note these must be waterproof bags as they may be stored outside at the finish.This bag must be marked  with your name, race number, and FINISH BAG

REGISTRATION

Registration will be held between 06:30 and 07:30 on Saturday 23rd March 2024 at GUISBOROUGH RUGBY CLUB You must carry all the items for the full race, anyone caught without full kit will be disqualified!
  • Race vest (backpack) or Bumbag large enough to carry all mandatory kit
  • Hat (a bandana is not sufficient) and Gloves.
  • Spare gloves
  • Waterproof Jacket (Must have taped seams and a hood)
  • Waterproof trousers.
  • Full running tights (Tracksters & 3/4 tights permitted).
  • Minimum of 1 litre water/sports drink  (to start race with, you are allowed to use this).
  • Headtorch/Torch (check your batteries or carry spare just in case).
  • Cleveland Way Map or OS Maps (Not just GPS)
  • Whistle.
  • Survival Bag or a Blizzard Survival Jacket http://www.blizzardsurvival.com/article.php/9/blizzard-survival-jacket
  • Foil blanket
  • Emergency food supply (chocolate/energy bar).
  • SPARE WARM LAYER can be a Lightweight fleece eg microfleece/Polartec etc or Merino Wool base layer or Primaloft jacket/down jacket*.
  • A fully charged mobile phone (to be kept on at all times)
  • Safety pins, clips, magnets or race belt with which to attach your race bib to your body
  • Suggested: ski goggles if the weather is forecast to be snowy
* If your Merino top is worn to start the race in then you will need to carry a Spare Warm Layer top in your bag* Water resistant/wind-proof jackets are not waterproof and will not pass kit check.At one or two undisclosed checkpoints along the route you will be asked to show a random item of your mandatory kit list, if you don't have it/them you will receive the following penalty(ies)
  • HAT (NOT BUFF) - 1 hour on your finish time
  • GLOVES - 1 hour on your finish time
  • WATERPROOF JACKET WITH TAPED SEAMS -Disqualification
  • WATERPROOF and/or WINDPROOF TROUSERS - Disqualification

EVERYBODY will be spotchecked. Anybody being abusive to the marshalls conducting the spotchecks will be instantly disqualified from the race. You will be checked in order of entering the checkpoint so you will not lose a position. Anybody caught stashing gear or passing it to a support crew/runner will also be disqualified! YOU MUST CARRY ALL YOUR OWN KIT!!

COACH

The COACH will take runners (who have booked a place on the coach) from the Race Finish (Helmsley) to the race start (Guisborough) BEFORE the event.TIME - 0600 outside at the Helmsley Market SquareCOACH FEE  - £22.50  This needs to be booked at the time of entering the race on Si entries

DROP BAGS

You will be allowed TWO NON-RETURNABLE drop bags.
  1. KILDALE VILLAGE HALL (11 miles)
  2. OSMOTHERLEY VILLAGE HALL (30 miles)
Please keep these to a minimum size: i.e. freezer bag size or supermarket carrier bag size. Remember there is food on the course, you will not need to bring a hamper of goodies!! The drop bags are really for spare gels, energy bars, food, sock change or an extra layer. REMEMBER: WHAT YOU DON'T CARRY WITH YOU OUT OF YOUR DROP BAG WILL BE DISPOSED OF!Drop Bags must have your name and Drop Bag location written clearly on the bag. Stickers tend to fall off, so if you use them find some foolproof way of attaching them to the bag, otherwise both your drop bags may end up at the same location.KEEP THE DROP BAGS SMALL AND REMEMBER THEY ARE NON-RETURNABLE RUNNERS are allowed 1 Small WATERPROOF Finish Bag.  TAPING/MARKING

95% of the course is on the Cleveland Way National Trail. The Cleveland way is well signed throughout ( The Cleveland Way uses an acorn as its symbol) Where the Hardmoors 55 route leaves the Cleveland Way the course is taped/marked.

CUT OFFS

  • KILDALE  (11 miles). -  4hrs
  • CLAY BANK (20 miles) - 6hrs
  • OSMOTHERLEY (30 miles) - 9.5 hrs
  • WHITE HORSE (44 miles) - 13.30hrs
  • HELMSLEY/FINISH (53 miles)  16hrs
    CUT OFF = Time you must be out of the Checkpoint & on your way to the next checkpoint 

RETIREMENTS

- Pulling out of the race during the eventYou must give the marshall/sweeper your race number and tracker. Anyone retiring from the race MUST contact the next checkpoint if possibleTHERE WILL BE A MINIMUM OF 2 SWEEPERS ON THE COURSE AT ALL TIMES

SUPPORT RUNNERS

You are allowed 1 support runner to join you from Sutton Bank to the race finish at Helmsley. They can park at Sutton Bank Visitor centre if needed, runners must not approach the car and cannot be handed anything from the car. Breaking of this rule may result in disqualification.

  • Any runner who is (in the opinion of the race directors, marshals or medics) unfit to continue will be withdrawn from the race. THEIR DECISION IS FINAL.
  • You must notify a race marshal at the first instance if you decide to retire from the race. Once you retire from the race your race number must be surrendered and you will not be allowed to continue.
  • You must carry ALL mandatory items for the duration of the race, no one else may carry your gear.
  • No Support Crews are allowed
  • PLEASE BE QUIET WHEN PASSING PEOPLES HOUSES AND DO NOT DROP LITTER.
  • NO CLIMBING OVER FENCES, USE THE STILES/GATES PROVIDED.
  • RESPECT OTHER USERS OF THE COUNTRYSIDE AND YOUR FELLOW COMPETITOR.

Team relay

Hardmoors 55 Relay Teams must include a maximum of 4 runners and a minimum of 2 runners. Relay Teams must have vehicle back-up, whether this be a nominated driver or a relay team runner. It is up to the Relay Team to decide how far each team member runs, but each team member must run through at least one of the checkpoints. Relay teams equipment requirements will differ from the standard race entry (see below).

Cancellation & Refunds

If you need to cancel your race for whatever reason we offer the following options:
  • You may transfer your place to another runner up to 4 weeks prior to the event. This is done yourself via the SI entries system. NB: This option is only available once the race is full and there may not be another runner who is trained up, so bear this in mind.
  • You may transfer your place to the following year’s event. Please email us to let us know if you wish this to happen
  • You may not transfer to another race within the same year
  • All entries close 4 weeks prior to the event because we need to order t shirts, medals and trophies in advance. Also, we need to give your medical information to our medical officer.
  • Refund ProtectRefund Protect is offered to participants during the online check out process, allowing you to opt-in to an enhanced set of cancellation and refund terms and conditions. If Hardmoors Ltd cancels a race

We endeavour to ensure all our events go ahead. If bad weather is forecast, we take advice from Mountain Rescue and the Police and take measures to ensure participant safety. However, in the rare event of extreme bad weather or other “Force Majeure” such as a global virus, we take advice from the Government and if despite our safety measures we are advised to cancel we will offer, where appropriate:
  • Transfer to a new date
  • Transfer to the next year’s event
  • Voucher towards an event
